spiritual life of Dominican Life Center residents is supported by a full
staff of chaplains who alternate being on call 24 hours a day, seven days
a week. Chaplains provide a listening presence for sisters and are there
to accompany them in their spiritual journey as they move through the
continuum of care.
sister who is new to the DLC is welcomed by a chaplain. However, once
the sister gets settled, she is free to choose a different chaplain if
she so desires. The chaplain builds a relationship with the sister in
order to understand how to best meet the sister's spiritual needs. Because
the needs of individual sisters vary, the chaplains are present to the
sisters in any way they can.
visit with sisters; keep the sister's family informed of her medical condition
as needed; assist with spiritual or faith-related activities, such as
prayer or communal anointing services, or Lenten soup and video programs;
and sometimes accompany sisters to their doctor or hospital visits. The
latter is especially important, because the chaplains serve as an extra
pair of eyes and ears for the sister and advocate on her behalf. Chaplains
are also constant companions to sisters when they are in the dying process,
and follow through on making the funeral arrangements.
