The Dominican Life Center
Pastoral Care

The spiritual life of Dominican Life Center residents is supported by a full staff of chaplains who alternate being on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Chaplains provide a listening presence for sisters and are there to accompany them in their spiritual journey as they move through the continuum of care.

Any sister who is new to the DLC is welcomed by a chaplain. However, once the sister gets settled, she is free to choose a different chaplain if she so desires. The chaplain builds a relationship with the sister in order to understand how to best meet the sister's spiritual needs. Because the needs of individual sisters vary, the chaplains are present to the sisters in any way they can.

Chaplains visit with sisters; keep the sister's family informed of her medical condition as needed; assist with spiritual or faith-related activities, such as prayer or communal anointing services, or Lenten soup and video programs; and sometimes accompany sisters to their doctor or hospital visits. The latter is especially important, because the chaplains serve as an extra pair of eyes and ears for the sister and advocate on her behalf. Chaplains are also constant companions to sisters when they are in the dying process, and follow through on making the funeral arrangements.

The pastoral care team is supported by pastoral assistants and companions who assist the chaplains in various ways.
